Plasma TV Display

A plasma display is a flat screened display commonly found in most of the Television of 32 inches or even more. There are tiny cells found in large number that holds a mixture of noble gases in between two glass plates. Due to electric effect these gases are turned to plasma that activates the phosphorus in order to emanate the light energy. The plasma display is completely different from LCDs in technology used.

The first type of plasma video was displayed in 1964 at Illions University by Donald Bitzer, Gene Slottow and Robert Willson who was a graduate student in the same university. Later in 1970 with the advent of semiconductor memory Cathode Ray Tube Displays gained more popularity than Plasma displays.

As the days past IBM introduced orange on black monochrome display showing IBM 3270 terminal sessions simultaneously. Fujitsu in 1992 launched the first colored plasma display of 21 inches. Later different companies like Panasonic Corporation, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Hitachi Limited, Sony, pioneer, IBM and many more started to make tremendous advancements in manufacturing the Plasma displays.

As analyzed by everyone each and every item product has pros and cons, even plasma displays have theirs:

  • Its benefits or gains are given below
  • A Flat and slim screen can be easily fixed to the walls
  • Light weight
  • Accurate color reproduction
  • Superior contrast ratio
  • Viewing angles are wide of 170 degrees where the images too do not undergo any degradation
  • Ideally suitable for fast moving pictures

However, the disadvantages that exist are:

  • They are more exposed to screen burn in
  • Phosphorous loses its luminous property which leads to decline in the image brightness
  • The screen starts to flicker after long usage
  • Compact sized displays are not available
  • They consume more electric power compared to LCD TV displays

Contrast ratio is the difference in the bright and dark point of the image considered at any given time. This is usually expected to be of higher value in order to give a clear and more realistic image.
